Founded in 1927, our church has been known by many names. Originally known as The Ogden Union Church, we were founded as a ministry which catered to the needs of the Japanese speaking immigrants moving to the area at the time.
We moved into our new building and changed our name to The Ogden Japanese Christian Church, continuing to meet the needs of our nisei (second generation) and sansei (third generation) Japanese Americans through traditional worship, Bible study, and Sunday School. In 1957, we expanded our building to meet the needs of a growing congregation.
In the years following the 1980s, both our church and neighborhood underwent many changes. As we had fewer members who spoke Japanese, services were changed entirely to English, and our church population changed along with it. In 2015, our congregation voted to change our name to The Ogden Christian Church, to better reflect our congregation’s increasing diversity.
In 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we moved to a virtual hybrid model and found that many of our worshippers preferred an online option. For this reason, we have decided to continue to offer virtual worship into perpetuity.
We are still proud of our Japanese roots, and celebrate our ancestors, but look forward to our future. Only God can know what the future body of our church will become.
We are affiliated with PC(USA) and United Church of Christ, and are a body that is welcoming to anyone.
